💧 $SUI Token Starts to Recover After $223 Million Exploit on Its Biggest Decentralized Exchange Sui’s native token started to recover after its price tumbled earlier on Thursday due to a more than $200 million exploit of the layer-1 blockchain’s largest decentralized exchange, Cetus.  SUI was recently trading at $3.89, CoinGecko data shows. The token, which fell from $4.18 to $3.82 after news of the Cetus exploit erupted on Crypto Twitter, was down 3.7% over the past 24 hours.  Malicious actors have siphoned $223 million worth of digital assets from Cetus’ liquidity pools, Sui said Thursday in a social media post. The wallet connected to the attack was recently holding about $37 million in cryptocurrencies, SuiVision records show.   “The Cetus team is exploring paths to recover those funds and return them to the community, Sui said in the statement, adding Cetus has paused smart contracts to prevent further theft. “An incident report from Cetus is forthcoming.” The exploit comes as the decentralized finance sector has struggled to weather an increasing number of multi-million-dollar cyber attacks over the past few years. A Chainanalysis report shows that stolen funds in the DeFi sector totaled $2.2 billion in 2024, a 21% increase from the year prior.  More broadly, centralized trading platforms for digital assets have also suffered due to critical cyberattacks on their infrastructures. A Wellington-based man was arrested in Auckland as part of an international investigation into a crypto scam operation allegedly stealing $265 million (NZD$450 million) from seven victims. New Zealand’s Financial Crime Group made the arrest following an FBI-led probe into the criminal network. According to authorities , the cryptocurrency was fraudulently obtained between March and August 2024 through victim manipulation tactics, with the stolen funds laundered through multiple cryptocurrency platforms. Over the past three days, search warrants have been executed in three locations—Auckland, Wellington, and California—resulting in multiple arrests, including the New Zealand suspect. A total of 13 individuals now face charges in connection with the scheme. According to the details, the Wellington man has been accused by the US Department of Justice of racketeering (RICO). The charges also include conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors allege the defendants used the funds from the crypto scam to fund an extravagant lifestyle. They also spent approximately $9 million on exotic cars, hundreds of thousands of dollars on luxury handbags, watches, and clothing, and up to $500,000 per evening on nightclub services. Other purchases allegedly included private security guards and high-end rental properties in Los Angeles, the Hamptons, and Miami. Following an appearance in Auckland District Court, the man was granted bail and received interim name suppression. He is scheduled to reappear in court on July 3. According to a U.S. Department of Justice statement , the superseding indictment unsealed charges against 12 additional people. This includes both American and foreign nationals for allegedly participating in the cyber-enabled racketeering conspiracy. Several suspects were arrested in California this week, while two remain abroad and are believed to be living in Dubai. The criminal enterprise allegedly operated from October 2023 through March 2025, with members reportedly acquiring a fleet of at least 28 exotic cars ranging in value from $100,000 to $3.8 million.

Coinbase Global Inc., the largest US-based cryptocurrency exchange, disclosed a data breach that compromised the personal information of a select group of customers, including prominent figures in the tech industry. The breach, which the company estimates could cost up to $400 million in remediation and reimbursements, involved cybercriminals bribing overseas customer service representatives to gain unauthorized access to sensitive user data. Among the Coinbase Global Inc. customers whose personal information was compromised in a hack of the exchange was Sequoia Capital Managing partner Roelof Botha, a person familiar with the matter said. The source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the information, confirmed that details linked to Botha’s Coinbase account—including his phone number, address, and other personal data—were compromised. Coinbase revealed on Thursday that attackers had paid off customer service representatives in India with cash to obtain client information illicitly. Bloomberg News reported that the stolen content contained names, dates of birth, addresses, nationalities, government ID numbers, some banking data, and information about the creation dates and balance of accounts. The hackers later asked for $20 million in ransom from Coinbase to not disclose the breach, which was an extortion attempt that the company declined. Coinbase said in an interview with Bloomberg that strange logs from some of its customer service representatives were noticed as early as January. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the company was refusing to pay the ransom and would instead offer a $20 million bounty for anyone who provided information that led to the attackers’ arrest. The fact that the attackers obtained Botha’s previously unreported information suggests they were specifically targeting wealthy and influential individuals. Botha is a member of the so-called PayPal Mafia, a group of former PayPal employees that includes notable figures like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk. He joined Sequoia, one of the world’s leading venture capital firms, in 2003, where he made early investments in companies such as YouTube and Instagram. He became the firm’s senior steward in 2022. Coinbase declined to comment on the incident. Botha did not respond to requests for comment, and Sequoia Capital also declined to speak on the matter.
