Privacy-centric firm Nym, backed by a16z and other investors, has launched its zero-knowledge powered payment system and introduced a perpetual token buyback model. The decentralized technology provider’s DePIN payments system and token buyback are now live for public testing. Specifically, NymVPN, first introduced in November 2023, will launch commercially on March 13, 2025. Ahead of the public rollout, users will have the opportunity to battle-test the payment mechanism,, the NymVPN team said in an announcement. When it goes live, subscribers will be able to pay in fiat such as euros and dollars, or in Bitcoin ( BTC ). The project also supports payments with the native NYM token. Nym will convert all fiat and crypto payments for NymVPN subscription to the native token NYM, with the perpetual buyback set to create a “flywheel” reflecting market demand. “The launch of NYM activated the supply-side of privacy and created a network of over a thousand nodes. Today we are activating the demand side, allowing ordinary users to pay in fiat and Bitcoin for NymVPN. Their payment is then converted to NYM token buy-orders to keep the network running,” the Nym CEO added. With global need for privacy solutions and VPN adoption on the rise amid increased security and censorship, Nym’s layer-0 network offers both the anonymity and safety users need. Meanwhile, buyback means subscriptions will help create consistent buy pressure for the NYM token. NYM, which launched in 2022, is a token designed to reward the Nym ecosystem’s mixnet node operators. According to Harry Halpin, chief executive officer of Nym, the token is key to the project’s goal of delivering a privacy-focused decentralized network. The launch of the DePIN payment system and the NYM token repurchases brings the project’s crypto-economics “full circle.” It allows NYM’s use in tokenization and in rewards, providing further incentive for the community. “Just like everyone should enjoy clean water and electricity, people deserve secure and private communication,” Jaya Brekke, chief strategy officer at Nym, said. “This is not speculative, but a growing real world need. And with the launch of the perpetual buyback mechanism, the token can shift out of a speculative promise to instead signal such real world demand.”

MetaMask has expanded its fiat off-ramp feature to more than 10 blockchains, with support enabled via its partnership with payments firm Transak. Self-custodial wallet MetaMask, the leading provider in the Ethereum ( ETH ) ecosystem, will now allow users to convert tokens into fiat directly on top blockchains such as BNB Chain, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base and Optimism. MetaMask users previously had to first swap tokens for ETH before converting these into fiat. The deal was both not cost-effective or efficient. “By expanding off-ramping capabilities with Transak, MetaMask is removing barriers between crypto and traditional currency, allowing users to convert a broader range of tokens directly to cash,” Lorenzo Santos, senior product manager at Consensys. The expansion means users across these networks will get access to direct off-ramping with the supported cryptocurrencies. First to go live is ETH on both Ethereum and Optimism, and BNB as well as Polygon ( POL ). MetaMask’s growth of the off-ramp feature from the initial support rolled out when it partnered Transak in September 2023 also marks an increase to supported countries. From initially providing access to users in the United Kingdom and European Union only, Transak’s integration means this network will grow to over 100 countries in coming months. MetaMask also unveiled Transak-enabled on-ramping in 2021. “MetaMask remains one of the first crypto wallets for most web3 entrants in 2025. It means increased on and off ramping support across many regions, bringing financial inclusion and freedom to the unbanked and underbanked. Ethereum developers are rolling out a major network upgrade called Pectra, with initial testing started on the Holesky testnet at 9:55 PM UTC today. The Sepolia testnet will follow on March 5 at 7:29 AM UTC. These testnet trials mark an important step before Pectra reaches Ethereum’s mainnet, bringing improvements to scalability, validator incentives, and user experience. The Ethereum Foundation confirmed that Pectra would launch on Holesky at epoch 115,968, while Sepolia’s activation is scheduled for epoch 222,464. Once both testnets successfully integrate Pectra, developers will decide on a mainnet activation epoch. Given the scope of improvements, Ethereum’s transition toward a more user-friendly and scalable blockchain is gaining momentum. Pectra is the first major Ethereum upgrade since the Dencun hard fork , which went live on March 13, 2024. That upgrade drastically cut transaction fees for layer-2 solutions and improved Ethereum rollups’ efficiency, pushing the network further toward mainstream adoption. One of Pectra’s most significant changes lies in validator rewards. Currently, Ethereum validators can stake a maximum of 32 ETH while earning rewards. With Pectra, that limit skyrockets to 2,048 ETH, providing larger stakeholders with greater incentives to help secure the network. This change is expected to attract more institutional participation in Ethereum staking. The shift aligns with Ethereum developers’ broader strategy of enhancing the network’s security and making validator participation more rewarding. Ethereum’s upgrade strategy has been accelerating. On February 13, Ethereum’s core developers and ecosystem leaders held an “All Core Devs” meeting, where they pushed for a faster rollout of protocol upgrades. Nixo Rokish, a member of the Ethereum Foundation’s protocol support team, commented that this approach would lead to “less dilly-dallying about the scope and more aggressively presented opinions.” Pectra brings a major enhancement in account abstraction, a feature designed to improve the way users interact with Ethereum. With the introduction of EIP-3074, externally owned accounts (EOAs) will gain new capabilities, such as batch transactions and gas sponsorship. This means users can make transactions without holding Ether in their wallets, reducing entry barriers and making Ethereum more accessible. Another key upgrade in Pectra is the network’s 50% increase in blob capacity. Currently, Ethereum allows three blobs per block, but that number will double to six after Pectra’s activation. Blobs temporarily store layer-2 blockchains, enabling them to submit compressed transaction data to the mainnet. This enhancement is expected to further lower transaction costs and improve Ethereum’s scalability. Since blobs were introduced with the Dencun upgrade, transaction fees on layer-2 networks have dropped significantly. Pectra’s expansion of blob storage is another step in making Ethereum-based transactions more cost-effective. Further, the upgrade also boosted Ether inflow reaching $393 million.

Market maker Chainflip has announced it will proceed with a plan to enable interfaces to block illicit flows within the Chainflip protocol. Specifically, the market maker said a new upgrade would block funds from the Bybit hack. Chainflip, which describes itself as one of the largest decentralized cross-chain services, said it took this step because there is broad consensus that such funds expose liquidity providers (LPs) to excessive risk. A statement shared via X on Feb. 25 said Chainflip had moved quickly to cut off access to its main interface after flows from the Bybit hack were detected Feb. 22. This was a few hours after alleged North Korea-backed hackers stole digital assets worth nearly $1.5 billion. Chainflip added that its network participants have no interest in supporting criminal activity. Explaining how the upgrade to existing broker-level screening tools is expected to help thwart the Bybit hackers and other bad actors, Chainflip said: Currently, brokers (a state chain role used by interfaces to interact with the network) can reject incoming BTC deposits if they detect a high-risk transaction using any screening tool of their choice (or a combination thereof). Rejected deposits are sent back directly to the refund address specified by the user. This feature is now being extended to Ethereum and all ERC20 tokens. Shortly after conducting what has been described as the “largest financial heist” in history, the Bybit hackers began converting and swapping the stolen digital assets into bitcoin (BTC). Some reports suggested hackers had succeeded in cashing out digital assets worth millions of dollars. To stop the hackers, some in the crypto industry called on platforms like Chainflip to freeze the illicit funds. At the time, Chainflip argued its decentralized protocol could not completely block the funds. However, in one of its posts on X since the hack, Chainflip suggested the upgrade, expected to go live within 72 hours, would provide robust and permanent protection for LPs on the network. It claimed the upgrade would make its platform unattractive to criminals looking to launder stolen funds.
