Sixth Street, a private equity firm with over $100 billion in assets under management, has backed blockchain-based lending platform Figure Technology Solutions with a $200 million investment. Figure and Sixth Street revealed the investment in a press release on Feb. 27. The two firms have formed a joint venture in which Sixth Street’s Asset-Based Finance division will invest $200 million in equity into Figure. The funding will strengthen Figure Connect, the platform’s private credit lending division, by enhancing its loan origination capabilities. According to Sixth Street, the joint venture will inject over $2 billion of liquidity into the non-agency mortgage market through Figure. Meanwhile, Figure Technology will leverage this investment to scale its operations. “This joint venture between Figure and Sixth Street puts Figure Connect on a trajectory that is ultimately intended to lower costs for lenders and borrowers, similar to how borrowing costs were lowered with the introduction of TBAs in the agency mortgage space. It validates Figure Connect as the largest, most liquid, blockchain-based capital market,” Todd Stevens, chief capital officer at Figure, said. Launched in June 2024, the Figure Connect platform utilizes blockchain technology to offer benefits such as market risk hedging and sales automation. The Figure Connect network operates on the Provenance Blockchain, which Figure uses to onboard all loans. As a leading originator of real-world assets, the Provenance Blockchain enables Figure’s partners to access price discovery through on-chain loan pool bidding. In December 2023, over 40% of Figure’s transaction volume occurred on the blockchain. Through its partnership with Sixth Street, Figure will tap into additional liquidity and gain access to an “always-on” programmatic bid for its assets. Block, the Bitcoin company co-founded and helmed by Jack Dorsey, has implemented a new feature that solves one of the biggest problems in the crypto space: inheritance. While fiat systems are usually identity-based, allowing for the transfer of assets to next of kin in case of death, bitcoin is different. Crypto is based on data access, where a private key is what allows funds to be moved without third parties. This means that if access to this key is lost with the death of its owner, funds risk being lost forever. Block’s system, which was first announced back in November and works in tandem with its in-house developed Bitkey hardware wallet, seeks to solve this issue by linking a wallet to another private key. This will allow for the transfer of funds six months after the user’s death. Jason Karsh, Bitkey’s head of business, highlighted that the need for this kind of solution in the crypto space would only grow in the future. He stated: A lot of people have significant amounts of bitcoin at this point, or appreciating bitcoin, that’s sitting in a place where it’s not going to get to their loved one. Wrench attacks are rising in the cryptocurrency space. Local reports state that a Chinese national was found dead in a luxury hotel in Jeju City, South Korea. The individual who was found dead was allegedly trading crypto while this happened. The man, identified by Korean media as Mr. E, was found in his hotel room on February 24th with multiple stab wounds. Before this, an acquaintance reported that he could not contact the man, who went to the hotel to trade cryptocurrency. Local authorities are currently investigating the case, and have already arrested four Chinese nationals that are suspected to have organized the crime. One of the perpetrators surrendered and others were arrested at other locations, including an airport and a hotel casino. Reports indicated that besides murdering the trader, the assassin also ran away with nearly $59,000 belonging to the victim. However, it is still unclear if these funds were stolen in crypto or fiat. No more details were shared by the local press as the local Jeju City police are currently investigating the details of the crime and the possible chain of events that led to the death of the victim. This kind of crime linked to crypto, where attackers use violence or coercion, has been on the rise lately, with experts claiming this will become more common as crypto gets mainstream. Another crime involving a kidnap and a crypto ransom was revealed this month when unsealed court records indicated that a family of four paid $15 million to be released in Chicago.
