Amazon to deploy 1,618 satellites by 2026 for Kuiper Project
Amazon has launched its first two operational satellites as part of Project Kuiper, beginning the rollout of a planned 1,618-satellite constellation aimed at expanding global broadband coverage by mid-2026.
The launch took place Monday from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, using United Launch Alliance’s (ULA) Atlas V rocket.
This marks the first deployment in a series of 46 planned launches under an agreement between Amazon and ULA.
According to ULA, eight of these launches will use the Atlas V rocket, while the remaining 38 will use the Vulcan rocket system.
ULA, a joint venture formed in 2006 by Lockheed Martin Space and Boeing Defense, has been a frequent contractor for U.S. government and commercial missions.
Amazon’s satellite effort enters direct competition with SpaceX’s Starlink network, which already has more than 7,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit.
"We have worked diligently with the Project Kuiper team to place this important mission into orbit and are grateful for the opportunity to continue building upon this dynamic partnership," said Gary Wentz, ULA vice president of government and commercial programs.
Amazon’s space-related efforts now include both Project Kuiper and Blue Origin, its aerospace company focused on human spaceflight and rocket development.
The launch is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to enter the commercial space communications market.
Tory Bruno, ULA president and CEO, noted the increasing pace of launch operations.
“This launch marks the first step towards the future of our partnership and increased launch cadence,” he said.
ULA also indicated ongoing modifications at Cape Canaveral to support future Kuiper missions and accommodate growing demand for launch services.
According to Amazon, the deployment aims to improve connectivity in remote and underserved regions globally.
