OpenAI adds limits after Ghibli AI art surge
OpenAI has implemented temporary rate limits on its ChatGPT image generation tool after a viral trend overwhelmed its infrastructure with Studio Ghibli-style AI art requests.
“It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT but our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient,” stated CEO Sam Altman, confirming the measures on March 27.
The company launched upgraded image generation capabilities in ChatGPT-4o on March 25, triggering a wave of users creating Ghibli-inspired AI art.
Altman initially participated in the trend, sharing a Ghibli-style portrait of himself, but later clarified that the surge strained OpenAI’s servers.
“Also, we are refusing some generations that should be allowed; we are fixing these as fast we can,” he added.
Rate limits aim to manage infrastructure load, with OpenAI explaining they prevent server overload during sudden spikes in demand.
While Altman did not specify a timeline for lifting restrictions, he noted the free tier would soon be capped at three daily image generations.
The trend drew participation from high-profile figures, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and White House AI advisor David Sacks, who shared Ghibli-style images mimicking Disney characters and personal events.
Separately, Bloomberg reported OpenAI anticipates tripling revenue to $12.7 billion this year, citing internal projections.
Altman previously announced plans to release GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 in coming weeks, though the infrastructure challenges highlight scalability hurdles for AI services.
OpenAI’s response underscores the balancing act between innovation and infrastructure capacity as generative AI adoption accelerates.
While the company works to optimise systems, users face temporary constraints amid rising demand for creative tools.
