Ghibli memecoins surge 39,000% amid AI art trend
The launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4o image generation tool has triggered a surge in Ghibli-themed memecoins, with Solana-based (CRYPTO:SOL) tokens like Ghiblification (CRYPTO:GHIBLI) rising over 39,000% in value.
On March 25, OpenAI introduced AI-generated images in its ChatGPT-4o mode, prompting users to flood social media with Studio Ghibli-style artwork inspired by films like Spirited Away.
While neither OpenAI CEO Sam Altman nor Elon Musk endorsed specific tokens, their public use of the feature—including Musk’s Ghibli-style self-portrait—sparked investor interest.
Ghiblification, the largest Ghibli-themed token by market cap, reached $20.8 million in value within 19 hours of its launch on March 26, trading at $0.02083 at the time of publication.
At least 20 similar tokens emerged in the same period, reflecting renewed activity in the memecoin sector, which had declined 57% since December 2023.
Crypto trader Sachs noted the trend’s potential to revitalise markets, stating, “Severely needed,” in a March 26 X post.
However, analysts caution against volatility, citing the CHILLGUY (CRYPTO:CHILLGUY) token’s 95% drop from its November 2023 peak.
The trend aligns with broader patterns of memecoins tied to cultural movements.
CHILLGUY, which capitalised on the viral “Just a chill guy” meme, briefly reached a $643 million market cap before collapsing.
While AI-driven art trends may temporarily boost memecoins, experts emphasise the risks of speculative investments.
“These tokens often lack utility and rely on hype,” observed one trader.
The surge highlights the intersection of AI tools and crypto markets, where viral trends can rapidly influence asset prices.
For now, Ghibli-themed tokens remain a high-risk, high-reward niche within the broader memecoin landscape.
