The reshuffle makes Mark Chen the Chief Research Officer, as Julia Villagra takes over as Chief People Officer amid key leadership exits. OpenAI is expanding research, considering a for-profit shift, and seeking $40 billion in funding to drive AI innovation.

OpenAI is making leadership changes as CEO Sam Altman steps back from daily operations to focus on AI research. The company wants to strengthen its research and product development while expanding its global reach.

The changes come against a backdrop of rapid growth and growing pains. OpenAI is drawing millions of users and advancing the field of AI models, but it is also facing technology leadership departures and scrutiny over AI safety.

OpenAI’s chief operating officer, Brad Lightcap, will run the company’s day-to-day business, focusing on international expansion and strengthening ties with technology giants such as Microsoft and Apple.

Lightcap has been among the most visible faces of OpenAI. He brokered major funding deals and was directly engaged in OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft, which provides the computing power behind ChatGPT. The expanded role comes amid Altman’s efforts to spend more time on AI research and innovation.

OpenAI has greatly augmented its leadership ranks since Altman was briefly pushed out by the board in late 2023, a sign of the company’s growing headcount, valuation and ambitions.

OpenAI adds new members to its executive team

New Chief Research Officer: Mark Chen will spearhead efforts to bridge AI research with applied aspects. The aim is to accelerate the conversion of OpenAI’s discoveries into products people can use.

Chen will most likely play a focal role in evaluating any trade-offs between safety and the need for new software releases. A 22-year OpenAI veteran who most recently served as OpenAI senior vice president of research, Chen is responsible for integrating research and product development. Per the blog post, the aim is “getting research into products people love more quickly.”

Julia Villagra has been appointed Chief People Officer. She will be responsible for hiring, company culture and workforce management. Her role is crucial as OpenAI expands and competes for top talent.

The changes have come as OpenAI has faced a series of high-profile departures. The former chief technology officer, Mira Murati,  departed in September to pursue her AI company.

Several other top figures have also left, including co-founder John Schulman and former Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever.

Altman puts AI innovation first

Sam Altman has retreated to focus on AI research and products. He believes that incorporating OpenAI’s tech into the world improves its research. He aims to push forward with influential AI models to help capitalists and people.

Mira Murati has not been replaced as Chief Technology Officer. Instead, the company adopts a more focused approach to its executive and research teams.

The company is also considering a major reorganization. OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit but is now considering switching to a for-profit public benefit corporation. It is also negotiating to raise as much as $40 billion in funding, giving the company a $300 billion valuation.

Not even leadership shake-ups seem to be in play: OpenAI has offered no sign it’s changing course. Their mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.
