Kaspersky Lab employees reported that they have discovered new malware, SparkCat, which steals data from mobile crypto wallets.

According to experts, the software uses optical character recognition technology, which reads text from images. This allows fraudsters to scan a potential victim's photo gallery in search of passwords to restore crypto wallets hidden in screenshots or saved notes.

To avoid raising suspicion, the iOS version only requests access to the gallery when performing certain actions, such as opening a support chat.

The malware has been active since March 2024. It has “infected” popular food delivery and messaging apps available on Google Play and the App Store. Interestingly, this is the first known case of an OCR-based thief infiltrating an Apple platform.

Kaspersky Lab estimates that the malware has already infected more than 242 devices across Europe and Asia. The exact origin of the software remains unknown, but embedded comments in the code and error messages have led cybersecurity researchers to believe that the software developers are fluent in Chinese.
