Reddit NFT holders raise concerns after program lead exits

The departure of Bianca Wyler, the head of Reddit’s Collectible Avatars NFT project, has sparked unease among the platform’s NFT holders regarding the future of the program.

“My role at Reddit has come to a close. While I am saddened by this transition, I am incredibly proud of the work I accomplished during my time there,” Wyler stated, announcing her exit on LinkedIn on Jan. 6.

Reddit Collectible Avatars (RCA) are NFTs hosted on the Polygon (CRYPTO:MATIC) blockchain that showcase unique renditions of Reddit’s alien mascot.

Launched in July 2022, these avatars allow users to personalise their profiles and offer perks like enhanced comment features.

Despite a strong start, the program has seen waning secondary market activity.

Dune Analytics reports over 33.5 million total holders, but monthly secondary sales volumes have plateaued around $100,000 since late 2024, significantly lower than their peak in 2022.

Wyler, who joined Reddit in June 2024, acknowledged the decline in NFT sales when she started.

“The program needed some dedicated care and thoughtful strategy,” she remarked.

Within three months, she implemented measures that improved community sentiment and boosted sales.

Her exit has led some Reddit users to speculate about the program's continuity.

Posts from Wyler’s Reddit account have been deleted, fueling rumors that Reddit may scale back its NFT offerings.

Wyler described her departure as part of the “natural shifts” in social media companies as they adapt to new technologies.

“While I’m unsure of the current direction for the RCA program, I’m confident that Reddit will continue to do good by its community — the true driving force behind everything the company builds,” she added.

Reddit has not issued a statement on the future of the RCA program.
