Vitalik Buterin, co-creator of Ethereum, has contributed 10 million Thai baht ($292,039) to support wildlife conservation efforts at Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo. The zoo in Chonburi Province operates within the Khao Kheow-Khao Chomphu Wildlife Sanctuary and houses diverse animal species.
Buterin’s donation specifically supports the care of Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus born in July 2024. The zoo expressed gratitude on its social media platform. It highlights that Buterin’s contribution will assist the zoo community and its visitors over the next two years. In response, Buterin thanked the zoo for the warm welcome and shared his enthusiasm for becoming Moo Deng’s “adoptive father.”
Plans for Future Contributions Using Ethereum Holdings
When launching his project, Vitalik Buterin said that he would allocate 88 additional ethers (up to $296,050 at present) to help Moo Deng and the other company inhabitants. This shows that he is serious about the welfare of wildlife and willing to use his cryptocurrency to help.
Buterin often donates his Ethereum for good causes too. On occasion, blockchain tracking services have observed him transferring ETH to exchanges. This is likely for conversion into fiat currencies to facilitate donations. This transparent approach aligns with Ethereum’s foundational principles of decentralization and accountability.
Khao Kheow Open Zoo Acknowledges Buterin’s Support
The Khao Kheow Open Zoo publicly recognized Buterin’s contribution in a tweet, noting its significance for the welfare of Moo Deng. The zoo described the partnership as a positive step toward enhancing its community’s well-being. He pledged to collaborate closely with Buterin over the next two years.
This donation highlights the potential of cryptocurrency to support meaningful global causes. Buterin’s generosity not only provides vital resources for wildlife care but also sets an example of how blockchain leaders can leverage their wealth for sustainable development.
The adoption of Moo Deng symbolizes a growing trend of high-profile individuals engaging in charitable activities. By channeling Ethereum’s capabilities toward humanitarian and environmental efforts, Buterin continues to showcase the transformative power of decentralized technology.
