Watford’s crypto journey began in 2019

Watford’s collaboration with Cointelegraph reinforces the club’s dedication to fintech and blockchain, marking a new milestone in the club’s cryptocurrency journey, which began in 2019.

Watford FC’s embrace of cryptocurrency dates back to 2019, when it became one of the first Premier League clubs to feature the Bitcoin logo on its jerseys during the 2019–2020 season.

“Watford FC was first introduced to Bitcoin through our partnership with Sportsbet.io, a crypto sportsbook,” Watford FC commercial director Paul O’Brien said.

The club later introduced a Bitcoin ( BTC ) hospitality box at its stadium, where fans could participate in cryptocurrency-themed events. The club also planned to host the Crypto Cup at Vicarage Road, involving a football tournament followed by education and discussion from guest speakers and crypto experts.

Following the Sportsbet.io partnership, Watford FC also inked a partnership with the crypto casino and sports betting platform Stake.com in 2021, showcasing the Dogecoin ( DOGE ) logo on its shirts.

Watford FC to increase visibility in the crypto market

The Cointelegraph partnership marks the next chapter in Watford FC’s crypto journey. By leveraging Cointelegraph’s platform, the club aims to boost its presence in the crypto space.

The collaboration aligns with Watford FC’s positioning itself as a tech-savvy football club, increasing the club’s visibility in the crypto market, O’Brien said.

“Engaging with a crypto partner ensures Watford stays competitive in exploring emerging revenue streams,” he added.

The partnership also aims to facilitate education campaigns about cryptocurrency and blockchain in the football community.

Cointelegraph managing editor Gareth Jenkinson highlighted the synergies between the cryptocurrency industry and Watford’s ambitions, highlighting a future where Bitcoin and crypto go mainstream.

“We firmly believe Watford can retake its place in the Premier League. We hope to be a part of that journey while educating and informing a broader audience on the industry we cover,” Jenkinson said.

“At Cointelegraph, we strive to connect the world of blockchain with broader audiences. Partnering with Watford FC allows us to blend the passion of sports with the innovation of fintech, creating unique opportunities to engage with a global audience,” Cointelegraph’s sales lead Pavel Shikhaleev added.
